Lesson 1: Early Church Jurisdictions - 5

Roman EmpireNow that we have considered the meaning of the terminology which describes the leadership offices of the church, we are ready to review its actual progress from the book of Acts forward. Whereas the many local churches developed along the Roman Roads and into the countrysides with relatively limited communication in those days, larger cities sprang forth missionary training centers. Antioch was one such missionary launching point from a very early date. We see this when we trace the steps of Paul. Paul was sent out from Antioch.

"From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished" (Acts 14:26).

After three missionary trips stemming from Antioch, and after having established the churches around Ephesus, Macedonia and Achaia, Paul moved on to Rome and possibly beyond. But the role of Antioch as a missionary launch center continued. The letters of Ignatius, one of the first bishops there, bear witness to the strength of this great historical patriarchate.
